How to Clean Cement Sidewalks

Clean sidewalks improve the appearance of property and are safer than cluttered or slippery sidewalks for pedestrians. Sticks, stones and fallen fruit and leaves create hazards that can trip even the most agile person, and they pose a real risk to less nimble people such as toddlers and senior citizens. While somewhat labor-intensive, cleaning cement sidewalks is not difficult and takes only a short time, but the sidewalks must be maintained on a regular basis to keep them looking their best.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep leaves, sticks, stones and other debris from the sidewalk. Using a push broom quickens the task because its wide, bristled head covers a larger area than smaller brooms.

    • 2

Scrape debris such as smashed fruit, molded leaves and large clods of mud from the sidewalk with a sidewalk scraper. The scraper is a tool similar in appearance to a hoe, but it has a straight, unbent blade. Apply light pressure when using the sidewalk scraper to avoid gouging and pitting the cement.

    • 3

Rinse off smashed fruit and other stain-producing matter using water from a high-pressure hose. Spray the sidewalk at an oblique angle to remove the unwanted debris effectively. Spray the water into the cement's cracks to blast out trapped debris.

    • 4

Pour a heavy-duty, non-toxic cleaner onto the sidewalk to eliminate remaining stains. Spread the cleaner over the sidewalk with the push broom, which will act as a large scrub brush. Use the cleaner according to its label's directions to avoid discoloring the cement.

    • 5

Rinse off the cleaner using water from the high-pressure hose. Hold the hose's nozzle at an angle to push the dirty water off the sidewalk and into the gutter effectively. Keep rinsing until no more suds appear and the stains are gone from the sidewalk.
