How to Troubleshoot a Goulds' Lawn Sprinkler Pump

The Goulds' lawn sprinkler pump is self-priming and uses an enclosed impeller with cast-iron construction, along with a replaceable check valve that holds liquid in the casing to maintain priming and pumping abilities. While most homeowners will never need to worry about their lawn sprinkler pump, if there are problems with the sprinkler system or the pump, some troubleshooting might be needed.

Reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse if the Goulds water pump motor is not operating. Shut down the sprinkler system and wait several minutes then restore power to cool down the motor if the thermal protector tripped.

    • 2

Remove the drain plugs from the system and drain out any excess water, including piping, if the pump is not moving water as expected. Replace all drain plugs and fasten them with Teflon tape.

    • 3

Disconnect the suction line if the pump is not suctioning water then flush out the line with water. Check for signs of damage and contact Goulds for service if necessary. Reconnect the suction line in a clockwise motion until secure.

    • 4

Rotate the motor shaft carefully if the pump is operating slowly. Loosen the bolts on the motor shaft if the motor impeller seems to be blocked and readjust it until the impeller hub can rotate easily. Tighten the bolts firmly.

    • 5

Prime the unit, after any troubleshooting or maintenance, before restarting the unit to prevent the buildup of pressure in the pump. Pour water into the top of the tee to fill the pump. Replace the pipe plug on top of the unit and secure the male threads with Teflon tape. Start up the motor and wait five minutes for the system pressure to stabilize. Repeat the priming procedure, if the system pressure is surging or dropping, before using the pump with the sprinkler system.
