How to Set the Drive Clutch on a Snapper Riding Mower

The Snapper riding mower has a drive clutch, also called the Power Take Off clutch, which controls the mower’s blades. When you turn on the mower blade switch, you engage the PTO clutch. After every 200 hours of mower operation, adjusting the Snapper riding mower’s clutch ensures it isn’t slipping and check that it’s properly engaging. Adjust the clutch if a new clutch was recently installed.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Take the key out of the ignition switch. Pull the spark plug wires from the mower so it cannot start on its own while you adjust the clutch.

    • 2

Lift the Snapper mower’s lid and locate the PTO clutch near the mower blades. It’s a circular part with three nuts around it.

    • 3

Slip the feeler gauge through the adjustment window in the side of the clutch.

    • 4

Tighten the adjustment nuts on all sides of the clutch with a wrench.

    • 5

Remove the feeler gauge. Reattach the spark plugs and start the ignition. Turn the mower off and watch the blades. If they come to a stop five seconds after you turn off the mower, the clutch is working properly.
