How to Convert a Soaker to a Drip Hose

Soaker hoses and drip hoses are garden watering methods that are more efficient and eco-friendly than the traditional sprinkler. Soaker hoses have thousands of tiny holes along their length that allow water to seep out into the surrounding soil. Drip hoses have water emitters spaced out that allow water to seep out at those spots only, not along the whole length of the hose. Converting a soaker hose to a drip hose requires forcing water to seep out only at certain sections.

Instructions

    • 1

Unhook the soaker hose from any connectors and couplings. Stretch it out on the grass in a sunny spot, and wash off any dirt or mulch on the surface. Allow it to dry completely for about one hour.

    • 2

Determine how far apart you want the water emitter sections to be. For example, if you want to water tomato plants, plan on about 12 inches between each water emitter. Choose a shorter span for smaller plants.

    • 3

Wrap silicone tape around the first section of the soaker hose. Start by wrapping the tape around once and then shifting the tape slightly so that it overlaps as it wraps down the hose. When you reach the desired length, stop and secure the tape end onto itself.

    • 4

Skip a 5-inch section of soaker hose to create the first water emitter section. Start taping again on the other side of this gap. Tape another segment until you reach the desired length and then stop. Leave a gap for the next water emitter section and continue.

    • 5

Work your way down the entire length of the soaker hose, leaving gaps for the water emitters. Allow the tape adhesive to bond with the hose for approximately 30 minutes before using it.
