How to Straight Edge a Lawn With a Weed Wacker

If you mow your lawn regularly, it makes sense to keep the edges well manicured. Clean edges highlight the mowing job and make it look professional, and they aren't that difficult to achieve with a weed whacker, also known as a line trimmer. The best trimmer for the job is a lightweight electric or battery-powered model with a straight shaft. Larger gas-powered models intended for control of hardy weeds are too heavy and difficult to control for lawn trimming. If you use an electric model, make sure you have enough cord for the entire lawn before you start.

Instructions

    • 1

Power up the machine either by plugging it in, inserting a battery or pulling the starting cord.

    • 2

Position yourself on the lawn facing the edge you're going to trim. Turn the trimmer upside down and pull the trigger to start it.

    • 3

Arrange the machine so that the string is rotating in a plane perpendicular to the lawn. Holding the angle steady, lower the trimmer until the string just touches the ground at the edge of the lawn and cuts the grass at the edge in a straight line.

    • 4

Move the trimmer laterally along the edge, keeping the string just above the ground and a uniform distance from the lawn.
