How to Overcome a Leaking Pool

Aboveground pools make excellent oases for escaping the unbearable heat of the summer. Aboveground pools have a disadvantage when compared to some in-ground pools; they are made with a thin vinyl liner that can easily tear or puncture. If this happens you must quickly take steps to overcome your leaky pool so you can continue to use it throughout the summer. Fortunately, if you have ever patched a tire tube or an inflatable toy, you will have a good understanding of the repair process for your pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hose of a drain pump into the pool water and allow the pump to lower the level of the pool water until you have enough room to access the leak. As a note, do not remove any more water than necessary as, pool liners can dry out in the sun.

    • 2

Wipe the area around the leak dry with a rag.

    • 3

Scuff the surrounding area of the vinyl with the metal scraper supplied in the vinyl repair kit. This creates a scuffed surfaced that will promote proper adhesion between the vinyl and the patch.

    • 4

Cut a vinyl patch with scissors that allows an extra 1 inch of coverage in all directions.

    • 5

Apply vinyl glue to the surface of the punctured vinyl and to the surface of the patch.

    • 6

Place the patch over the punctured area and press it securely with your thumb to expel any air bubbles trapped between the vinyl pieces. Wipe off excess glue with the rag. Follow the drying times listed on the glue packaging before refilling the pool with water. The times will vary depending on the brand of glue you use. Afterward, fill your pull back to normal.
