How to Pressure Test a Swimming Pool

If your swimming pool is constantly losing water, and the filter system isn't working as effectively as it should, pressure test the plumbing lines. Pressure testing will help you find out whether you have a leak in the line. Doing this yourself can avoid repair bills. It can also reduce operation costs due to loss of water and extra chemicals needed. It is not difficult to do and does not take long.

Things You'll Need

  • Pressure plug
  • Pressure tester
  • Test plugs
  • Water hose
  • Air compressor

Instructions

    • 1

Install a pressure plug on the intake valves, skimmers and one on the main drain by disconnecting the covers and screwing on the plug.

    • 2

Disconnect the unions at the filter and screw the pressure tester to the union. Disconnect one of the plugs and allow the pipes to fill with water to get a pressure reading.

    • 3

Watch the pressure gauge. When the pressure reaches 15 to 20 PSI turn the valve on the pressure tester to the left to turn it off. Continue to watch the gauge. It should hold pressure. Check the lines for leaks if there is a drop in pressure.

    • 4

Test each PVC line individually at the pump to find where the leak is so the pipe can be repaired.
