Pool Plaster Removal

Concrete in-ground swimming pools are not only the oldest form of swimming pools around, but they are also the most durable. Such a pool typically has a waterproof plaster topcoat that allows the pool to hold water. About every 15 years to 25 years, though, the plaster topcoat in a concrete swimming pool requires renovation. If a concrete pool's plaster topcoat is too worn, it is removed rather than renovated, and a new topcoat is applied.
  1. Stripping and Chipping

    • After a concrete pool is drained, workers use small air-driven, handheld chipping tools to strip off a pool's plaster topcoat. During this stage, the plaster topcoat is stripped and chipped off all the way down to the pool's concrete shell. After the pool plaster is removed, the underlying concrete is inspected.

    Partial Removal

    • An alternative to full pool plaster removal is partial plaster removal. Partial pool plaster removal is done when portions of a pool's plaster topcoat can be renovated instead of removed and replaced. However, in all pool plaster removal cases, plaster is removed from around pool fittings and lights rather than retained. Putting new plaster around pool fittings and lights renews waterproof seals and helps prevent leaks.

    Pool Tiling

    • During plaster removal, pool tiles are examined for wear, and stripped out and replaced if necessary. Pool tiles that are retained rather than stripped out during plaster removal are always protected during work. To avoid damaging retained tiles, the plaster topcoat surrounding those tiles is carefully chipped away by hand. Also, a special plaster cutting saw removes pool plaster next to tiles that are not being stripped.

    Considerations

    • Swimming pool plaster removal and re-plastering jobs are both priced by the total surface square footage of the pool being renovated. Quoted prices for pool plaster removal should always include collection and carting away of the old removed plaster. After pool plaster removal, one to two new plaster topcoats are then applied to pool surfaces to replace old removed plaster. Expect to pay from $2,500 to $4,000 for a pool plaster refinishing job, including pool plaster removal.
