Look around the backyard for a location that's sturdy and has even soil to support the hot tub. The area shouldn't be at the base of a hill since rainwater will flow down toward the hot tub and erode the base.

    • 2

Look up at the area over the hot tub to ensure there are no trees nearby that can drop limbs or leaves into the tub. The hot tub should also be at least 10 feet away from all power lines and poles.

    • 3

Choose a location near the home, if possible, since this requires less buried wiring. In addition, you won't have to walk far to use the hot tub in winter. The side of the home you choose must contain a water faucet from which to fill the hot tub.

Dig out an 8-foot by 8-foot area of ground until it's grass-free and level. Use a level to check for dips or bumps and remove them with the shovel. Lay down a thick rubber pad designed for hot tubs to provide a sturdy base. These pads simply lock together tightly like a puzzle.

Set up an appointment with an electrician to check your electrical system and upgrade it if needed. According to The Spa Depot, most hot tubs and spas run on a hard-wired, 220-240V 50 amp circuit that's GFCI-protected.

Prepare a clear area to allow the installer to move the hot tub from the driveway to the backyard. If needed, temporarily take down portions of fences or a gate to allow for easy access.
