Liner Vs. Masonry Pools

There's no finer sight, when it comes to backyard recreation, than an in-ground swimming pool. In-ground swimming pools provide a way to stay at home and yet have a range of recreation opportunities that are truly diverse. There are differences among in-ground swimming pool types, though, including what they're made of. For example, two of the three types of in-ground swimming pools, vinyl liner and masonry (concrete), vary greatly in terms of construction, cost and how they're maintained.
  1. Liner Pools

    • Vinyl liner in-ground swimming pools are the least expensive among in-ground pools to install. Vinyl liner in-ground pools feature metal or composite framing and walls that the liners cover. When it comes to maintaining the pool water chemistry, vinyl liner pools are easier to keep up with than masonry pools. As of 2011, vinyl liner pools cost about $17,000, including materials and installation.

    Masonry Pools

    • Masonry in-ground swimming pools are the most expensive in-ground pools to install. Masonry swimming pools also take the longest time to install, at three to 12 weeks, versus two to five weeks for liner pools. However, masonry swimming pool sizes and shapes are only limited by the imagination and budget. Water chemistry in a masonry swimming pool is a bit trickier to maintain when compared to a vinyl liner pool. Expect to pay around $37,000, including materials and installation, for a typical masonry swimming pool

    Long-Term Maintenance

    • Vinyl liner pools and masonry swimming pools both come with their particular long-term maintenance requirements. Vinyl liners require replacement every five to 15 years, on average. Vinyl liners can also develop leaks from punctures or tears from sharp objects. Masonry swimming pools are very durable and only need renovation, such as re-plastering, about every 20 years. Masonry pool surfaces are also waterproof, and it takes a lot to chip or crack them.

    Costs

    • Monthly maintenance costs for all swimming pools range from $50 to $150 for pool filters and lights, pool chemicals and cleaning tools. As of 2011, it costs between $2,500 and $3,500 for the purchase and professional installation of a replacement liner for an in-ground pool. If you need to have your in-ground masonry pool re-plastered, expect a bill of between $2,500 and $4,000. Moreover, the initial prices for both liner and masonry swimming pools often double after typical options, such as landscaping, are added.
