How to Adjust Swimming Pool Returns for the Skimmer

The pool return jet and pool skimmer may provide separate functions for a pool filtration system, but they are directly related. The pool skimmer provides the first point of contact for the pool filter by directing the water into the system to be cleaned. After the water filters, it releases through the return jet. You can make several adjustments to the pool skimmer in order to make the water cycle correctly to the return jet.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the skimmer top. Remove the basket regularly and clean it out. Large pieces of debris, especially leaves, can block the flow of water to the filter, which will decrease the pressure from the pool's return jet.

    • 2

Raise the water level to the halfway to two-thirds point of the skimmer's vertical height. Place a standard garden hose into the pool and closely monitor the water height as you add water. The proper water height can improve filter circulation and functionality.

    • 3

Adjust the pool's return jet. Turn the jet so that it's parallel to the pool surface. This helps you monitor the pressure and level of water circulation coming from the filter.

Remove small items from the pool that can get dislodged in the skimmer opening and block waterflow to the filter. Items such as tennis balls and small inflatable toys commonly find their way into the skimmer.
