How to Increase Alkalinity Without Affecting pH in a Hot Tub

The alkalinity in both pools and hot tubs is essential for proper water chemistry. The alkalinity in your hot tub helps regulate the pH readings. When the alkalinity is low, it will cause the pH levels in your pool to fluctuate, preventing you from properly balancing the pH. When the alkalinity balance is restored, the pH becomes stable. Before attempting to raise or lower pH, always raise the alkalinity first. The normal range for alkalinity is somewhere between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm).

Instructions

    • 1

Test the water with a testing kit or testing strips. Follow the testing kit instructions and record the spa's current alkalinity level.

    • 2

Turn the filter on. Add 1/2-pound of alkalinity-increasing chemicals directly to the water surface to raise the alkalinity levels 10 ppm. Adjust the formula according to your spa's water capacity and alkalinity reading.

    • 3

Run the filter for eight hours. Re-test the water and repeat if necessary.
