What Do You Need to Make Your Own Inground Pool?

Having an in-ground swimming pool in your backyard is an excellent way to ensure fun for the whole family. In-ground swimming pools, though, are never cheap. At time of publication even a basic 16-by-32-foot vinyl liner in-ground pool cost about $17,000. A way around the high cost of having an in-ground swimming pool built is to build one as a do-it-yourself (DIY) project. As far as what's needed to build an in-ground swimming pool, materials include concrete, cinder blocks and vinyl liners.
  1. Block Pools

    • The simplest and least-expensive way to build a very nice in-ground swimming pool is to use block construction processes. A block in-ground pool has cinder or concrete blocks for pool walls over which a vinyl liner is installed. Block swimming pools sit atop concrete foundations and deep pool ends typically have concrete floors. Other components used in block swimming pools includes pool plumbing, filtration and electrical systems. Most work on a block swimming pool can be performed yourself or contracted out.

    Pool Excavation

    • Excavating the hole for an in-ground swimming pool isn't usually a DIY project. Unless you have the heavy equipment and skills, it's better to hire a professional pool excavating company. Pool excavation for a DIY pool project runs from $900 to $2,000, according to one pool builder website. Expect to pay a higher price for swimming pool excavation if you need to have the dirt from the excavated hole trucked away.

    Pool Equipment

    • If you have some facility with tools and can follow directions, you can install all of your DIY swimming pool's equipment yourself. Many manufacturers sell complete DIY in-ground pool plumbing and filtration kits complete with directions. Additionally, if you feel confident you can install your DIY swimming pool's electrical wiring, which runs pool filters and lights, yourself. Alternatively, you can contract pool plumbing and electrical system installation out. Installation runs about $800 for both at time of publication.

    Pricing Considerations

    • There's always some concrete work needed for an in-ground swimming pool, including the decking around it. Reinforcing concrete used for an in-ground swimming pool means using re-bar. Most DIY swimming pool builders tend to contract swimming pool concrete work out, with costs running about $2,800 for an 18-by-40-foot pool. The concrete deck around an in-ground pool also costs about $2,500. Lastly, a custom-made, in-ground swimming pool vinyl liner will cost from $1,500 to $2,000 dollars.
