How to Reduce Bromine Levels

Bromine is a chemical used in place of chlorine in pools and spas to kill contaminates and bacteria so the water stays clean and safe. Bromine is often chosen over chlorine because it's easier to keep stabilized when water temperatures are hot. This is especially helpful in hot tubs. Even though bromine is usually easy to stabilize, there are times when bromine levels need to be raised or reduced to get them in the ideal range.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your spa or swimming pool water to see what your bromine levels are. Dip a bromine test strip approximately 18 inches into the water. Read the test strip. If the bromine level is about 4 parts per million (ppm), the bromine needs to be reduced.

    • 2

Turn the filter off and drain 6 inches of water from the spa or pool.

    • 3

Turn the filter back on and and fill the spa or pool back up with fresh water from a water hose.

    • 4

Test the bromine levels again. If the levels are still 4 ppm or higher, drain and refill 6 inches of the water again until the level tests at 2 to 3 ppm.
