How to Seal a Wood Hot Tub

A hot tub refers to an outdoor tank with warm, circulating, often chemically treated water and installed jets that cause the water to bubble and swirl. Having a hot tub on your deck, patio or yard is truly a gift, as it gives you an unparalleled way to relax. A hot tub with a wood frame gives this tank a rustic, woodsy feel. However, you must protect the wood frame from the elements by sealing its exterior.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine 1 cup of heavy-duty wood cleaner in a bucket with a gallon of warm water. Put on rubber gloves and dip a scrub brush in the mixture.

    • 2

Scrub down the outside of the hot tub thoroughly, removing any dust or dirt. Rinse it off with a steady stream of water from the garden hose. Allow it to dry for two full days.

    • 3

Attach a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to the bottom of an electric sander. Run the sander across the surface area of the wood frame of the hot tub. Do this once more with a piece of 220-grit sandpaper.

    • 4

Run a handheld vacuum cleaner across the surface area of the hot tub frame, sucking up all the dust from sanding.

    • 5

Dip a 3-inch nylon brush in your heavy-duty sealant. Your sealant must be designed for protecting wood from regular water contact, UV rays and mildew. Cover the wood in a generous coat and allow it to dry overnight. Apply three more coats, allowing them to each dry overnight before applying the next coat.
