How to Drain Inground Hayward Pool Filters

Hayward pool filters for inground pools keep the water clean by filtering tiny dirt particles from the water. As the water flows through the filter, the cartridge, D.E. (diatomaceous earth) filter or sand captures the dirt before the water returns to the pool. If you need to drain the water from the filter to clean the cartridge, change the sand or replace pump parts, you will need to drain the water from the pump first.

     Turn off the Hayward pool pump at the control box.

     Locate the drain outlet on the bottom of the pool filter. It will be a cap that winds on and off or a plug that pulls out. Wind the cap off the drain by turning the cap to the left or counterclockwise.

     Stand back from the pool filter and let the water run out. The draining process only takes a few minutes. When the water is done draining, recap the drain.
