How to Put in Pool Lights

Underground pools have spaces in their sides for light fixtures to mount into. These spaces are called niches and are large enough for a light fixture and a few feet of electrical wiring to fit inside. The niches lead to a transformer, plugged into a GFCI outlet, which brings the light fixtures down to a safe wattage and power the lights. Your new light fixture should last for several years without requiring any maintenance or repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off power to your pool's transformer so the lights cannot turn on. Reach into the water and remove the screw securing the old light fixture to the niche with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the old light fixture's tab from the niche's groove and allow the old fixture to float out, into the pool.

    • 2

Cut the old light fixture off the wiring with wire cutters. Go to the transformer and disconnect the wiring connections to that fixture. Pull the wire out of the conduit running from the transformer to the niche. If the wire seems stuck, pour some pool tile cleaner into the conduit and allow it to work its way through for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then try pulling the wire through again.

    • 3

Insert a fish tape through the conduit, starting at the transformer. Push the fish tape through until 2 to 3 feet extend out into the pool.

    • 4

Wrap the new fixture's wires around the fish tape's end and use the fish tape to pull the wires to the transformer. Extend the wires 4 to 6 inches into the transformer. Remove 1/2 inch of coating from each wires' end using wire strippers. Make the appropriate wire connections, according to your transformer.

Wrap the excess wire around the new fixture's base and slide the fixture into the niche. Line up the fixture's tab with the niche's groove, then align the fixture and niche's screw hole. Secure the fixture in place with the supplied screw.
