How to Use a Saltwater Chlorination System

Many people are opting to use saltwater systems in their backyard pool or spas. Instead of adding chemicals to your pool, salt systems create their own chlorine. Swimmers who experience bad or allergic reactions in typical pools can usually swim in a saltwater pool with no issues. Owners will save money on expensive pool chemicals and treatment. A saltwater chlorination system has three main components. The control box portion of the saltwater system applies an electric current to the salt cell, which will then produce chlorine.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the amount of salt in your pool or spa. When using a saltwater chlorination system, you will need to ensure that you have 2500 -3000 parts per million salt concentration in the water. You can read the amount of salt concentration on your control box of your system.

    • 2

Use a salt kit to test the water if your system is reporting a low reading before adding any salt. If your salt cell is failing, it could give an inaccurate reading. You can purchase a salt kit at your pool supply store.

    • 3

Add salt as needed if the salt kit test indicates a low salt level. You can add any type of salt that does not contain iodine. Add salt with the pump on. Stir the salt in your pool until it has dissolved.

    • 4

Review the stabilizer level on your saltwater system. The level should be between 30 - 50 ppm, or there will not be enough chlorine in your system.

    • 5

Run your pump during the hottest parts of the day in the summer. Your saltwater system only produces chlorine when the pump is running.

    • 6

Adjust the control knob as needed. If the chlorine level gets too low, as indicated on the system, you can modify the amount of chlorine generated.

    • 7

Remove the generator cell yearly to clean. Gently brush the cell, removing any buildup or debris.
