How to Build a Swimming Pool Ladder

A ladder is an essential tool for a deeper above-ground pool. The ladder will keep the weight off the side of the pool while still allowing everyone access. A ladder made of PVC pipe is strong enough to withstand the weight of regular use, while light enough to move when the pool is not in use. Weigh the PVC down with sand to prevent the side in the pool from lifting when submerged under the water and to keep the ladder stable when climbing.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 2-inch PVC Pipe
  • Hacksaw
  • PVC glue
  • 2-inch T-joints, 2 per rung
  • 8 2-inch 90-degree-angle connectors
  • 4 2-inch PVC caps
  • Sandbags or bags of rocks

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the pool. Usually, above-ground pools are no deeper than 48 to 52 inches. You will need twice the height of the pool plus 6 feet of PVC pipe.

    • 2

Measure and cut the PVC into 1-foot sections.

    • 3

Place one 90-degree angle on the work surface and apply glue to one of the newly cut 1-foot sections. Insert the section into the angle and hold for a few seconds. Repeat this process with three more angle pieces.

    • 4

Apply glue to one T-joint. Looking at the joint right side up so it looks like a "T" apply glue to the left opening and insert it into one of the 1-foot sections with an angle attached. The angle should be pointing the opposite way as the T-joint. Repeat for each of the 1-foot sections with angles attached.

    • 5

Place two of the pieces with the angles pointing away and the T-joints pointing inwards on the work surface. Apply glue to both ends of one 1-foot piece of PVC and insert the ends into the T-joints. This is piece A. Repeat with the other pieces with angles attached. This is piece B.

    • 6

Apply glue to two more 1-foot sections and insert them into the open ends of the T-joints of piece A. Repeat again for piece B.

    • 7

Make a rung by applying glue to one 1-foot section on both ends. Insert the ends into the middle openings of two T-joints. Repeat with another 1-foot section.

    • 8

Apply glue to the 1-foot sections on piece A, place a rung onto piece A. Repeat for piece B.

    • 9

Continue adding sections the same way until your rungs are just below the height of the pool ending with 1-foot sections without T-joints attached. Apply glue to one 90-degree-angle piece and attach it to the end of a 1-foot section. Point the angle 90 degrees from the direction of the T-joint in a counterclockwise fashion. Repeat with three more angles.

    • 10

Apply glue to the open ends of the angles on piece A. Insert a 1-foot section into each of the angles and apply glue to the other ends. Attach the angles of piece B to the 1-foot sections.

    • 11

Apply glue to the end caps and apply them to the open ends of the angles on the bottom of ladder.

    • 12

Place the ladder in the pool and weigh the bottom pieces with sandbags or bags with rocks.
