How to Install a Hayward Stand Pipe

The standpipe, also known as the internal pipe, in Hayward sand filters is attached to ten laterals and is a crucial component of the water filtration process. The laterals' sand filters water from the sand, moving clean water up the stand pipe where it's redirected back into the pool by the filter head. This filter system works well because of its simplicity.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the sand filter body on its base in exactly the position where it will stand permanently, installing the standpipe requires filling it with sand and once it's full it, will become very heavy.

    • 2

Wrap the bottom drain plug in Teflon tape and thread the plug into the drain hole found on the bottom of the filter's body.

    • 3

Look inside the filter and lift the stand pipe up half way to make reaching the laterals easy. Check every latter to make sure all ten are securely attached. Look in the bottom inside of the filter if one is missing and tread it into a corresponding lateral hole. Some Hayward filter models come with the laterals firmly mounted with screws on a swivel. Ff this is the case, pull each lateral away from the standpipe until it snaps closed in a perpendicular position to the standpipe.

    • 4

Position the standpipe so the bottom rests on the drain hub, which you can find in the bottom-center inside the filter body, and place the sand shield on top of the opened end of the standpipe.

    • 5

Fill the filter with water until the level reaches several inches above the stand pipe, roughly half way. Slowly fill the filter with the specified amount of filter sand for your particular Hayward filter model.

    • 6

Remove the sand shield off the stand pipe and fit the filter head onto the standpipe. Push down the filter head until it sits flush against the neck of the filter body.

    • 7

Place the large clamp around filter head base and filter body neck. Screw the clamp closed using the provided screws and Philips screw driver.
