How to Release an Air Bubble in a Hot Tub

The water lines in a hot tub can get air bubbles when the owner changes the filter and/or drains and refills the spa. These air bubbles then impede the flow of water through and out the jets, causing water pressure to drop significantly. This may eventually cause a backflow to occur, damaging the filter or causing a leak to occur. To get rid of air bubbles in a hot tub, you'll have to "bleed" out the lines.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden hose
  • Plastic bucket

Instructions

    • 1

Turn you hot tub off and allow the filter and heater to cool to room temperature. Wait for about 30 to 45 minutes until the water inside the hot tub is completely still.

    • 2

Locate the drain valve on the hot tub pump. This valve may be on the pump housing or below the pump near a "T" or elbow connector on a pipe.

    • 3

Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and put a plastic bucket under the valve to catch any dripping water. Put the free end of the hose in a bathtub or shower. As an alternative, place the free end of the garden hose outside.

    • 4

Turn the drain valve on and allow water to flow out of the tub, through the filter and out of the garden hose. You don't necessarily need to drain the tub entirely but should allow several gallons of water to flow out the valve. The air bubbles will be cleared once the water flows freely and without interruption.

    • 5

Shut off the valve and disconnect the garden hose. Wait a few moments for any residual water to drip into the bucket.

    • 6

Take the cover off the hot tub filer. Check the filter to ensure it is not dirty; if it is, replace it, then put the cover back on the filter.

    • 7

Connect the garden hose to the filter, then to a spigot. Turn the spigot on and refill the hot tub to its normal water level. Turn the hot tub on and use as normal thereafter.
