How to Keep Leaves & Other Stuff From an Outdoor Swimming Pool

Outdoor swimming pools can become full of leaves, twigs and other yard debris. The debris should be removed as soon as possible because it can clog your filtration system or lead to algae growth. There are steps you can take to keep leaves and other debris from falling into your outdoor pool in the first place. Keeping your yard tidy and keeping the pool covered when not in use are the most effective methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Use pruning shears to prune any branches that hang over the pool. Keep any other trees in the yard pruned according to their species requirements to minimize leaf fall. Pruning off broken twigs or branches will keep them from ending up in your pool.

    • 2

Rake the yard regularly to prevent the wind from blowing the debris into the pool. Bag the leaves or put them in a compost pile.

    • 3

Install a mesh pool cover designed specifically for keeping leaves out of the pool. Some covers go over the winter cover and others go over the pool by themselves. The stand-alone covers can come off every day. Install them according to the manufacturer instructions.
