How to Move Bees From Pools

Bees are attracted to swimming pools for two simple reasons: even small pools are large enough to sustain a hive and most pools have pungent chlorine odors that attract the scent-sensitive bees. A hive of bees making regular use of a pool can lead to unpleasant results, such as people being stung and drowned bees floating in the pool. Killing forager bees as they appear will prevent hives from seeing a pool as an attractive source of water, without having to destroy the nest itself. However, if the nest is directly adjacent to the pool, destroying the nest will be necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash out an empty spray bottle (such as those used for household cleaners). Create a mixture of four parts water and one part dish soap. Pour the mixture into the spray bottle. Spray the mixture on any bees near the pool to kill them. Repeat several times a day until no bees are seen near the pool for at least one whole day. Keep the mixture on hand and repeat as new bees appear.

Remove any bee or wasp nests on your property. Put on thick, body-covering clothing and thick cloth or rubber gloves and search for nests. The shape and location of a nest will vary depending on the species of bee. Wait until evening or nighttime, because most of the bees or wasps will have returned to their nest by then and they will be less active in lower temperatures. Spray insecticide directly on the nest and any exposed insects. Repeat as necessary.

Make your home and yard less attractive for bees. Close any outdoor trash cans tightly and remove any exposed food, especially fruit or anything with a sugary residue, from your yard. Remove any debris, such as large piles of branches, leaves, or wood, to reduce potential nesting spots. Treat any bird baths or pet dishes with 2 tablespoons of vinegar for every gallon of water. Keep your lawn cut short and keep any flowering plants away from the poolside.

Repair leaking faucets, spigots or any other dripping source of water. Remove any depressions that fill with rainwater by filling them in with dirt and planting grass to reduce erosion.
