How to Paint the Outside Walls of an Above Ground Pool

An above ground pool with metal walls is a permanent structure in your yard. However, after years of sun, wind and chemicals the outside can start to look a little rough. Perk your metal wall pool up with a new paint job to hide the old and make it look new. You can use any paint meant for aluminum siding for painting the pool walls. Other types of above ground pools---such as the inflatable ring and metal frame---do not respond well to painting. The PVC plastic material with which makes the liner of these pools does not hold paint well.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick an area that you want to paint. You may be painting the walls or just the frame posts between them. Tape off the area to prevent overflow and use the newspaper to protect any spaces that you are not painting.

    • 2

Wash the area with 1 cup of dishwashing detergent mixed with 1 gallon of water and 1 cup of TSP. Rinse with clear water and allow to dry.

    • 3

Sand the area to remove any existing paint and debris. Sanding will provide a rough surface for the primer to attach to. The area should have no shine and look cloudy before proceeding.

    • 4

Mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid in a bucket with water and wash the surface that you will paint. Allow to dry completely.

    • 5

Apply the primer with a brush or spray it on if it is an aerosol. Spray an even coat over the entire surface and allow to dry. Repeat with all the surfaces you are painting

    • 6

Spray on the paint over the primer. Use steady, even strokes to spray an even layer. Allow the layer to dry completely.

    • 7

Repeat painting the area two more times allowing plenty of time to dry between layers.
