Polaris Caretaker Installation Instructions

Polaris Caretaker is a five-port valve in-floor cleaning system for a swimming pool or spa that controls energy and chemical use, reducing the operating cost for owners. Over time it may become necessary to rebuild the five-port valve, but homeowners can accomplish this themselves with just some basic tools and a Polaris Caretaker 5-port Valve Rebuild Kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the union nuts next to and just above the water valve. Take the PVC elbow, union nuts and O-rings off. Remove the strainer cup and wipe it out.

    • 2

Remove the V-clamp with the 7/16-inch wrench and take the water valve off the bottom plate.

    • 3

Take the five small O-rings off the outlet ports and the large O-ring from the lower plate and throw them away.

    • 4

Loosen the six retaining screws and nuts using the 5/16-inch wrench. Pull the top housing up from the center plate and remove the internal parts.

    • 5

Place the new pistons from the rebuild kit into the center plate and push them in firmly.

    • 6

Place the large O-ring from the rebuild kit onto the outside of the center plate and place one steel ball on each piston hole.

    • 7

Hold the impeller up, with the rubber band around the cam assembly, and slide the axle pin into the middle hole of the center plate and press down. Cut the rubber band off and throw it away.

    • 8

Line up the axle pins on the center plate with the holes on the housing and seat the housing onto the plate. Secure the screws and nuts but do not over-tighten.

    • 9

Place the five new small O-rings into the grooves of the outlet ports and install the large O-ring onto the bottom plate.

    • 10

Hold the valve over the bottom plate, lining up the holes and pins, and tighten the V-clamp onto the valve.

    • 11

Place the clean strainer cup back in, place the PVC elbow back on and re-tighten the unions.
