You must have a salt chlorine generator to turn your swimming pool into a salt water pool. The generator changes the chemical composition of the salt water in order to release Hypochlorous acid into your pool water. The salt chlorine generator is installed in the pipe that carries the water from the pump to the pool.
There is no pool size requirement in order to use a salt chlorine generator system. Salt chlorine generator systems are available in a variety of sizes to be used in any size swimming pool. They may also be used with above or in-ground pools.
You need a pump and filter system to use with the salt chlorine generator. You may use your existing pump and filter system. Salt chlorine generator systems are also available with a pump and filter system combination. The pump and filter system is needed to run the water through the generator.
Salt is added directly into the pool water. You can use food-grade salt, water softener pellets, solar salt flakes, water conditioner salt, brine blocks or pool soft salt. Initially, you need 50 lbs. salt per 2,000 gallons of water. You must bring the salt content of the water to 4,000 ppm parts per million. Test your water using a salt strip before adding more salt. Salt levels over 6,000 ppm may cause corrosion damage to metallic equipment such as ladders, stainless steel handrails, light rings or copper heat exchangers. Very little or no salt may need to be added after the initial treatment.
