How to Cool an Above Ground Pool

One of the problems that can affect swimming pools is when extended periods of hot weather make the pool water extremely warm. This is especially true for above ground swimming pools, because they are typically shallower than in-ground pools with exposed exteriors. Since the water is shallow, it takes less time for it to heat up and become rather uncomfortable. One of the quickest ways to cool off your above ground pool water is to install a fountain or aerator. Fountains and aerators work by shooting water into the air, and the water is cooled by combining with air molecules before landing back into the pool.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or channel-locks (if needed)
  • Fountain or aerator kit

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all pool pump and filtration systems. You want no water to circulate through the pipes or pool while you work.

    • 2

Locate one of the water-return line ports. The return line ports are the small holes found on the inside of the pool wall. The ports normally shoot a jet of water back into the pool after cleaning by the filtration system.

    • 3

Unscrew the cover from the return line port. Use a wrench or a pair of channel locks if you cannot twist the cover off by hand.

    • 4

Screw in the fountain or aerator adaptor piece into the port. The adaptor piece will typically be an "L" shape that redirects the water straight up towards the surface of the water. Twist the piece into the wall until it is firmly in place, and the top port faces skyward.

    • 5

Screw one end of the fountain or aerator hose into the adaptor piece. Install the remaining end of the hose into the main housing of the fountain or aerator.

    • 6

Set up the aerator or fountain. If you have an aerator that just shoots a jet of water, you will want to place in a spot outside of the pool, and aim it so the stream of water lands in the middle of the pool. If you have a fountain, place it in the middle of the swimming pool so that the water shoots skywards and lands back down in the center of the pool.

Turn the pool's pumps and filtration system back on. Check the flow of water from the aerator or fountain. Adjust the stream so that it always lands in the middle of the pool.
