How to Apply Muriatic Acid to Above-Ground Swimming Pools

It may sound counter-intuitive to add acid to your swimming pool, but muriatic acid is actually a vital chemical used in balancing your pool's pH level. Muriatic acid must be added to your pool if the pH balance is above 8, but you cannot just dump the acid into the water in any way you please; otherwise, you risk damaging your pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket three-quarters full of water from your pool.

    • 2

Add acid to the water bucket. Consult the documentation that came with the acid to determine exactly how much acid you need to add.

    • 3

Turn on the pool filter, and then slowly pour the acid/water mixture back into the pool.

    • 4

Wait for four hours, and then test your pool water with a pool test kit. If the pH balance is still above 8, repeat the process.
