What Are Floating Pool Lights?

Floating pool lights are just as their name implies: lights that float on the surface of your pool. They are usually LED lights in a plastic housing, with foam to keep them afloat. They create a romantic glow at night and are useful from a safety standpoint, as well.
  1. Basics

    • Floating pool lights are used to add vibrancy and aesthetics to your nighttime pool activities. They come in various colors, shapes and sizes and float around freely. Most are battery-operated and use solar power so they charge up during the day.

    Advantages

    • Floating pool lights are generally cheaper than other aftermarket pool lighting systems, particularly those that require complex wiring and installation. They are also easy to remove when they're not needed; just take them out of the pool during the day and set them to the side.

    Disadvantages

    • Floating lights may require more maintenance than other types of lighting equipment, as they are moved around a lot. You must also recharge or replace the batteries. When you're ready to go in at night, you won't be able to just flip a switch to turn your pool lights off; you'll have to get in the water and retrieve your floating pool light if you don't want it on all night. Floating lights are also fairly dim compared to built-in lights.

    Bug Warning

    • Like with any type of pool lighting system, lights will attract bugs to the water. Many beetles, moths and other bugs are highly attracted to light at night. You may get more bugs in your pool than usual when you use floating lights.
