How to Install a Variable Depth Liner

Variable depth liners are vital to aboveground pools which have deeper water areas. This is because the ground underneath has been excavated away to allow for deeper areas in the pool. The variable depth liner is able to stretch over this deeper section. Since each pool configuration is different, the variable depth liner uses the overlap method to attach to the pool wall, and, therefore, it's necessary to cut off the excess liner.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the pool walls and section of the pool above the excavated area of any loose debris. The excavated area should be tamped down to create a solid surface before attempting to install the liner.

    • 2

Unroll the liner inside the pool. Work the liner so that the wall sections of the liner extend above the top rails.

    • 3

Secure the liner to the top rails by cutting small slits into the liner with a utility knife. Run rope through the slits and tie the liner in place. This allows adjustments to the liner to be made easily.

    • 4

Smooth out wrinkles and creases as much as possible using your hands and a soft-bristled broom. A variable pool liner is meant to stretch, and all wrinkles may not come out at installation.

    • 5

Fill the pool with water, continuing to smooth out any creases and wrinkles with your hands and the broom.

    • 6

Remove the ropes and top rails around the pool wall when the pool is almost full.

    • 7

Install the edge of the liner according to the manufacturer's instructions. For overlap pool liners, the edge of the liner is wrapped over the edge of the wall and a plastic coping is placed over the wall. The coping holds the liner in place.

    • 8

Cut away excess liner from around the edges of the pool using the utility knife.

    • 9

Reattach the top rails over the plastic coping. The top rails also provide additional support to the liner.

    • 10

Finish filling the pool with water.
