Turn the power off to the electrical supply cable at the main panel.
Verify the absence of power with a voltage tester. Test the tips of the wiring with the tester probes. Place one probe on the black hot wire and the other on the white neutral wire.
Remove the knockout disk plates at the position the power supply wiring will enter and where the heater cable will enter. Pry the knockout disk plates using a flat-head screwdriver first, then twist the plates out for the remaining amount with combination pliers.
Install the threaded end of a 1/2-inch cable stress connector in each of the two holes. Turn the connector ring nut by hand clockwise from the inside of the box until snug. Tap the raised outer lugs of the nut with the flat-head screwdriver to tighten.
Push 4 inches of the electrical supply cable and the heater cable through their respective stress connectors into the timer box.
Cut 3 inches of sheathing from the power cable and the heater cable with a utility knife.
Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from each of the wires using wire strippers.
Connect the white neutral wire from the power supply, along with either of the two wires from the timer clock and the white neutral wire from the heater to terminal "A," to the Intermatic timer terminal bus. Place the wire ends on each side of the terminal plate and tighten the terminal screws clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver.
Connect the black hot wire from the power supply and the remaining wire from the timer clock to terminal "1" and tighten the terminal screw.
Connect the black wire from the heater to terminal "2" and tighten the terminal screw. Terminals 3 and 4 will remain disconnected.
Cut a 4-inch length of bare copper ground pigtail wire from stock using wire cutters. Bend one end into a loop with needle-nose pliers.
Connect the looped end of the pigtail wire to the green grounding post screw to the left of the "A" terminal. Tighten the post screw clockwise with a screwdriver.
Connect the bare copper ground wires from the power supply and the heater cables with the straight end of the pigtail with a wire nut. Tighten the nut clockwise by hand.
Tighten the stress connectors for the power supply and the heater cables.
Repeat Section 1 steps 1, 2 and 3.
Install the threaded end of a 3/4-inch cable stress connector in each of the two holes. Turn the connector's ring nut by hand clockwise from the inside of the box until snug. Tap the outer lugs of the ring nut with the flat-head screwdriver to tighten.
Repeat Section 1 Steps 5, 6 and 7.
Connect the black hot wire from the power supply and either timer clock wire to terminal "1". Tighten the terminal screw clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver.
Connect the white hot wire and the remaining timer clock wire to terminal "3." Tighten the terminal screw.
Connect the black heater wire to terminal "2." Tighten the terminal screw.
Connect the white heater wire to terminal "4" and tighten the terminal screw.
Repeat Section 1 Steps 11, 12, 13 and 14.
