How to Increase Sodium Bicarbonate in a Pool

Maintaining your pool with the use of chemicals will ensure the sanitation of the pool. When the pool is properly sanitized, it makes the pool safe for people to swim. A water chemistry that needs to be maintained is the total alkalinity level. The pool's alkalinity levels should range between 80 ppm to 120 ppm. When alkalinity levels are too low, pool staining, green water and metal erosion can occur. You can increase your pool's total alkalinity by adding levels of sodium bicarbonate.

Things You'll Need

  • Alkalinity test kit
  • Sodium bicarbonate

Instructions

    • 1

Gather a sample of your pool water using the viewing cell of the alkalinity test kit. Fill up to the fill line.

    • 2

Add the alkalinity indicator to the water until it changes to a blue or green color.

    • 3

Add the alkalinity reagent using the dropper in the kit. Count each drop added until the water changes to the color specified on the test kit.

    • 4

Multiply the amount of drops by 10 to get the alkalinity reading in ppm.

    • 5

Add sodium bicarbonate to the pool water if the alkalinity is below 80 ppm.
