How to Winterize the Bottom Drain of a Swimming Pool

Once the summer and pool season is over, pool owners need to winterize their pools in preparation for the colder weather. If you have an in-ground pool, you must also winterize the bottom drain so that it doesn't freeze and crack when the temperature gets below freezing. The winterizing process of the bottom drain is a simple one, especially compared to the rest of the pool.

Open the valve for the main drain and allow the escaping air to bubble up for about 45 seconds via the air blower. Doing this purges the air from the drain. If the air is left inside the drain, it could cause it to expand when the temperatures reach below freezing.

    • 2

Close off the valve to the drain immediately to stop the air from going through the drain after the 45 seconds are up. Turn off the air blower.

    • 3

Thread the drain plug into the drain opening to block the water from flowing through the drain pipes.
