Surfaces for a Swimming Pool Deck

Considerations

• One of the major considerations when it comes to choosing a material for pool decking is safety. The deck will be constantly wet, so not only must the material be able to hold up to damp conditions but also it must not be slippery. Slips and falls around pools can be dangerous, if not deadly, so choosing a decking material that will provide traction even when wet can save family and friends from falling. Pools and decks that are in an area that gets direct sunlight for much of the day can also become extremely hot, so choose a decking material that will not hold the heat.

Concrete

• Concrete is a durable material that can be a suitable choice for the deck around an inground pool. Seal the concrete deck for a water-resistant finish to this low-maintenance material. A variety of concrete finishes allow for a deck that fits in with almost any type of outdoor decor. Concrete decks can be finished in various colors and combinations, including light colors that will reflect rather than store the heat. Stamp the concrete after pouring to create a stone, brick or tile look. Texture the concrete for a slip-resistant surface that will not only look attractive but also will be easy to walk and sit on.

Wood

• Wood decks are high maintenance, but can present a classic feel to the pool. A deck made from wood will be considerably lighter than one made from a form of concrete, making it a good choice for the deck around an above-ground pool. Choose the right type of wood for a long-lasting deck; pines like the Douglas fir and trees like the redwood will yield strong, hardy boards. A wood deck can be pricey, but spending the money upfront will help you save in the long run, as you'll be less likely to have to replace expensive boards than cheaper, weaker types of lumber. Seal the deck regularly to help keep the deck from being damaged by water, from developing splinters and to help protect it from insect and animal damage.

Vinyl Tile

• Vinyl tile is another hardy, slip-resistant option for building a pool deck. Use tile to cover other base materials like concrete, ceramic or wood. Vinyl tiling has several advantages in addition to being extremely slip resistant. This covering is easy to clean, and not only will drink and food spills wash right off, but also animal droppings, leaves and other debris can easily be hosed away before ending up in the pool. Tiles are available in a wide range of colors and designs, allowing the homeowner to customize the look of the pool area. They are also extremely hardy, and resistant to potentially harsh pool chemicals. If an area of tile does get damaged, it can be easily replaced without tearing up a large portion of the deck.
