Homemade Hot Tub Oils

Hot tubs provide hydrotherapy benefits, including soothing medical conditions and sports injuries, and increasing relaxation. Aromatherapy increases hydrotherapy's benefits with the addition of therapeutic oils in the warm water. But discretion has to be taken when adding oils to the hot tub. Thick carrier oils such as mineral, sweet almond or olive, which are used during body massages, cause the hot tub filter to become clogged and may disrupt the water chemistry or clarity. Essential oils, which are thinner, are pure, concentrated plant extracts, and only a few drops are needed. They don't clog the filter or cloud the water. Use one or any combination of the oils for homemade hot tub oil blends.
  1. Relaxing

    • Ylang-ylang essential oil is extracted from a tropical flower and has a sweet, heady scent. The aroma aids in relaxation by easing muscle tension and calming the nervous system. It's also an antidepressant and defuses frustration, anger, trauma and stress. Lavender is one of the most widely used and well-known essential oils. It calms the nerves, and balances hormones to relieve emotional problems and feelings of instability. To relieve insomnia or anxiety, add a few drops of Roman chamomile essential oil to the hot tub water.

    Stimulating

    • Lemon essential oil is extracted from the fruit's peel, and its scent acts as a stimulant that energizes the body. It's also a disinfectant and treats wounds and infections. Add a few drops of rosemary to refresh and stimulate the mind, and enhance concentration and memory. Thyme is another stimulating essential oil. It picks up circulation and strengthens mental and physical well-being.

    Soothe Sore Muscles

    • Warm water is effective at loosening and easing the pain of sore muscles. A few drops of one or a blend of several different essential oils can increase the impact. Clary sage has a cooling effect that helps relax muscles. Lavender and rosemary both have properties that work as muscle relaxants. Marjoram also alleviates overworked muscles, as well as arthritis, bruising and sprains.

    Medicinal

    • Various illnesses and infections are soothed and healed by essential oils. Tea tree essential oil has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that expedite healing of various fungal infections; it also boosts the immune system. People suffering from bronchitis, coughs, asthma and other respiratory issues may benefit from eucalyptus essential oil. It also acts as a disinfectant and is healing to insect bites and other skin irritations. Nausea and upset stomach are allayed by inhaling peppermint essential oil.
