How to Install Hayward DE6020 Grid Filters

Swimming pool filters with replaceable media fall into two categories: Sand filters and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Sand filters use industrial-grade silica as the filter bed and are most suitable for private residential or smaller public pools in places like apartment complexes. For larger, more heavily-utilized pools, DE filters are preferred for their higher flow rates and shorter pool water turnover times. Diatomaceous earth is a soft sedimentary rock that is processed into an extremely fine powder with a very high porosity factor, making it an excellent filter media. In the Hayward DE6020 filter, diatomaceous earth is streamed into the filter body and coats a series of seven filter grids. The grids are routinely purged of contaminants through a standard backwash procedure. Grids may also be removed from the filter canister, cleaned externally, then re-installed.

Instructions

  1. Removal Of Filter Grid

    • 1

Turn off the circulation pump and disconnect all electricity to the filter area.

    • 2

Close all inlet and outlet water valves and open the air bleed valve on top of the filter.

    • 3

Unscrew the filter drain plug in the bottom of the filter body. Drain the filter.

    • 4

Remove the filter body clamp nut and clamp bolt with a 3/4-inch socket and socket wrench.

    • 5

Spread the filter body clamp and lift the clamp up and off of the filter body.

    • 6

Separate the upper filter body from the lower filter body. Do not lift it by holding the pressure gauge.

    • 7

Hose down the filter grid element while it is still in the filter body to remove as much diatomaceous earth as possible.

    • 8

Loosen the filter grid element from the vertical outlet elbow by rocking it gently from side to side.

    • 9

Grasp the filter grid element and lift it up and out of the filter body.

    • 10

Clean the filter grid element by hosing it inside and outside with a garden hose. Brush away any particles of diatomaceous earth that stick to the filter grid.

    Installing The Filter Grid Element

    • 11

Remove and clean the rubber filter tank seal. Wipe clean the seal surface in the upper and lower filter body.

    • 12

Lubricate the O-ring on the outlet elbow with the manufacturer's recommended O-ring multilube.

    • 13

Lower the filter grid element into the filter tank, making sure the manifold outlet fits over the outlet elbow O-ring and seals properly.

    • 14

Install the filter tank seal on the lower filter body.

    • 15

Place the upper filter body on the lower filter body. Rotate the upper filter body so that all safety and operation labels are facing out and visible to the operator. Press down on the upper filter body to seal it against the tank seal.

    • 16

Spread the ends of the filter clamp and install it on the filter body. Position the clamp so the clamp ends are aligned with the safety and operation labels.

    • 17

Install the clamp bolt in the clamp ends and thread the clamp nut on the clamp bolt.

    • 18

Tighten the clamp bolt with a 3/4-inch socket on a torque wrench. Tighten to 150-inch pounds of torque.

    • 19

Open all valves. Restore electricity to the circulation pump and turn on the pump. When water begins to spurt out of the air bleed valve on the top of the filter body, close the air bleed valve. Check the filter body for leaks. Reinstall fresh DE filter media.
