How to Install a Hydrostatic Relief Valve in a Pool

A hydrostatic relief valve acts as a one-way valve that lets ground water into a pool while keeping the pool water from running out. The hydrostatic valve opens when there is an excessive buildup of water pressure beneath the pool. The groundwater enters through the valve until equilibrium in pressure between the pool and the ground water occurs, preventing damage to the pool. A hydrostatic relief valve installs in the main drain of an in-ground pool while the pool is empty. You can do it yourself with the proper tools and basic do-it-yourself ability.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the pool drain. It is usually located at the lowest part of the pool. The pool should be drained and free of water at this time. If it's not, drain the pool.

    • 2

Remove the drain grate screws using the appropriate screwdriver. Pull the grate up and off the drain dress ring.

    • 3

Insert the hydrostatic relief valve into the drain tube and tighten clockwise by hand until it is fully seated.

    • 4

Replace the drain grate and tighten the grate screws clockwise with the screwdriver.

    • 5

Fill the pool with water when ready.
