How to Connect the Hydrostatic Release Unit

A hydrostatic release unit is a type of valve installed in an in-ground swimming pool. This valve is designed to relieve the pressure of groundwater after the pool is emptied. In-ground swimming pools contain up to 20,000 gallons of water that have up to 150,000 pounds of force. Installing a hydrostatic relief valve prevents the buildup of pressure that can damage the bottom of your pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the main drain valve of the pool to drain the water. If a drain valve is not installed, you may need to use a pump to drain the water.

    • 2

Remove the grating for the main drain, which will be at the deepest part of the pool. Lift the drain grate by using the screwdriver.

    • 3

Disconnect the dress ring by turning it counterclockwise to expose the valve stem.

    • 4

Attach the hydrostatic relief valve onto the valve stem. Turn the hydrostatic relief valve clockwise by hand to tighten.

    • 5

Reconnect the drain ring to the top of the drain, and then set the drain grate back in place.
