Birdcage Rescreening Instructions

A pool enclosure -- also known as a birdcage -- keeps flying debris, sticks, leaves, insects and animals from entering your pool area. Some people also rely on pool cages to provide a sense of privacy. Enclosures typically are wooden or metal frames covered with a simple screen, similar to that found inside a screen door. Birdcages can become damaged due to pets, weather and more, and they may require rescreening at some point.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the end of the screen spline out of its groove, and pull the old or damaged screen from its frame.

    • 2

Measure the bad panels with a tape measure. Then cut out pieces of a matching size from the new screen roll. Add about 1/2 inch to the ends to leave a little wiggle room. Cut the new screen spline to match the same size as the one you removed.

    • 3

Ask a friend to hold the new panel in front of the screen frame. Using your spline utensil, push one end of the spline onto the screen, and slide it into the frame groove. You can allow yourself a 1/2 inch or so at the top, to cut off later.

    • 4

Slide the spline into the frame groove by applying pressure to the screen. Smooth out any imperfections in the frame. Using a pair of scissors or a knife, cut off the excess material.

    • 5

Repeat this methodology for the rest of the panels that need to be rescreened.
