How to Install a Portable Pool Pump & Filter

Portable pools allow you to enjoy the pleasure of owning a pool without all the hassle and expense of digging up your yard. If you move, the pool is easy to take down and move to your new home. Most portable pools use a combination pump and filter that connects to the pool via flexible hoses and uses a standard household plug for power. If you want to install a portable pool pump and filter, you'll need some basic hand tools and about a half day to complete the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the portable pool according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Attach the pump and filter housing to a board or piece of plywood to prevent damage from tipping or falling. Drive wood screws through the four mounting holes in the base of the pump into the board or plywood.

    • 3

Place the board with the pump attached on blocks or bricks close enough to the pool for the supply and return hoses to reach the ports on the side of the pool. Use the blocks or bricks to elevate the pump to prevent submersion of the pump if the pool leaks or overfills.

    • 4

Remove the plug from the lower port on the side of the pool. Insert one of the included strainers into the port, with the strainer positioned inside the pool. Slide the supply line from the pump onto the nipple of the strainer, extending outside of the pool. Slide the line all the way onto the nipple and tighten the hose clamp securely with a screwdriver. Connect the other end of the supply line to the supply or inlet side of the pump. Tighten the hose clamp.

    • 5

Remove the plug from the upper port on the pool. Insert the other strainer through the port. Slide the return line onto the nipple and tighten the clamp. Connect the other end to the supply or outlet port on the pump and tighten the clamp.

    • 6

Fill the pool with water until the water level is one to two inches above the upper port on the pool. Open the air-release valve on top of the pool pump. Allow all of the air to escape the pump and lines through the valve, and close it when water flows out of the valve.

Plug the power cord from the pump into a GFCI protected outlet. Secure the cord to prevent tripping or snagging of the power line by people using the pool. Allow the pump to run until the water is clear.
