How to Use Bromine for Algae in a Saltwater Pool

When you think of a saltwater pool, you may have the misconception that these pools only use salt to maintain clean water that's safe for swimming. Saltwater pools use chlorine to clear the water of harmful bacteria and contaminants, such as algae. Salt is not an algaecide or sanitizer; it facilitates the generation of chlorine through a saltwater chlorine generator. Regularly check your chlorine levels and shock the pool to rid it of algae buildup. Typically used in spas for its ability to handle the hot water temperatures, bromine is a chemical similar to chlorine that combines with the bacteria to neutralize it.

Instructions

  1. Test the Water

    • 1

Check the chemical levels in the pool with a bromine test strip. Insert a bromine test strip into the water and thoroughly soak the strip.

    • 2

Remove the strip from the water. Hold it out of the water for the amount of time specified by the test strip instructions.

    • 3

Compare the color on the strip with the color chart provided by the manufacturer. Standard bromine levels range from 2.5 to 4.0 ppm. Consult your pool maintenance instructions for the proper chemical levels for the saltwater pool.

    • 4

Test the bromine levels every week, and daily during very warm periods. The heat contributes to algae growth, which can appear overnight.

    Add the Bromine

    • 5

Consult your pool maintenance handbook for information about eliminating air from the brominator tube before adding the chemical. Some systems require you to remove the air by turning the saltwater chlorine generator on "Low " and allowing the water to fill the tube slowly to reduce the chances of getting air caught in the tube.

    • 6

Place bromine tablets inside the automatic bromine feeder, or brominator. The automatic bromine feeder connects to the filter and pump system and breaks down the tablets, releasing the bromine into the pool. Do not simply toss the tablets in the pool, as they will not break down properly.

    • 7

Replace the cap on the brominator when the water almost reaches the top of the tube. The water dissolves the tablets, allowing the bromine to work its way through the filter and pump into the pool.
