What Will Take Stains off of Swimming Pool Tiles?

Stains on a pool make it appear old and dirty. Stains may form from a variety of issues. Hard water, lime and calcium deposits by build up along the water line, even with proper cleaning. Bacteria and environmentally occurring scum may also form on tiles leaving them unsightly. Several methods will remove these issues.
  1. Acid

    • Specially formulated commercial acids will clean stains from pool tiles. Proper use of the acid removes scum, bacteria, hard water, oil and calcium stains at the water line and beyond. Only a small amount of the acid is necessary, limiting the chemical impact on the pool. Apply the acid to the pool, and allow to sit for only a short time. Use a mild detergent, such as dish soap, along with the acid. Scrub with a pool brush, and rinse with clean water. The pool will need chlorination or shocking afterward. Check the pH balance of the water before using the pool after this treatment.

    Vinegar and Baking Soda

    • For the environmentally conscious pool owner who wishes to be stain free, the answer may be in the kitchen cabinet. The combination of acidic white vinegar and abrasive baking soda removes most stains from swimming pool tiles and whitens the grout in between. This method requires lowering the water level in the pool. Do not mix highly chlorinated water with the vinegar. Mix a paste of baking soda and vinegar, and apply with a clean pool or scrub brush. The action breaks down calcium stains and kills some bacteria. Rinse with clean water, then test the pH level of the pool before using again.

    Pumice

    • Sometimes good old-fashioned elbow grease is the best solution for a cleaning problem. Pumice stones will help clean stains off pool tiles. Rub the stone over the stained areas in a circular motion. The abrasive action removes almost any stain including scum and calcium. Use caution with this method. Excessive scrubbing with pumice may scratch or scar pool tiles. Improper use may cause permanent damage to the pool. Always wet the stone before using, and keep it wet during cleaning.

    Bleach

    • The chlorine that keeps a pool germ-free and pH-balanced is similar to household bleach. This chlorine can remove many stains from pool tile. Select a gel base or foaming action bleach, and apply it to the stains on the tiles. For bacteria, mold and scum, allow the bleach to sit for several minutes. Scrub with a brush, then rinse with clean water. The bleach will affect the pH level in the pool. Check carefully, and add the appropriate chemicals prior to use.
