How to Replace a Lateral on a Triton II Commercial Sand Filter

Sand pool filters like the Triton II percolate pressurized swimming pool water through a bed of sand to filter out dirt and other contaminants. Buried at the bottom of the sand filter media bed are an array of laterals -- small plastic pipes that radiate like wheel spokes from a central hub. Laterals are perforated with holes tiny enough to keep out sand but admit the filtered water and channel it back to the pool through the multiport valve. If you've noticed filter sand collecting around the inlet valves in your swimming pool, the bad news is you've got one or more fractured laterals. The Triton filter system provides convenient access through the top. With its large 8-inch tank opening, a swing-away diffuser and side-mounted multiport valve, you've got an easier job ahead of you than with other makes.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the pool recirculation pump.

    • 2

Close all valves leading to and from the filter to the pool.

    • 3

Open the air bleeder valve on top of the filter canister, and wait until all pressure is relieved.

    • 4

Remove the water/sand drain plug in the bottom of the filter tank, and allow all the water and filter sand to drain out of the filter into a drain pan. Dispose of the filter sand.

    • 5

Use the plastic wrench supplied with the filter to unscrew the closure on the top of the filter tank.

    • 6

Pivot the diffuser head counter-clockwise and out of the way.

    • 7

Rinse the inside of the filter tank out with a garden hose to remove residual sand.

    • 8

Reach down to the bottom of the filter tank and locate the broken lateral. Unscrew the broken lateral from the hub assembly and remove the lateral from the tank.

    • 9

Screw the replacement lateral into the hub assembly and hand-tighten securely.

    • 10

Replace the drain plug in the bottom of the tank.

    • 11

Add the manufacturer's recommended volume of number 20 grade industrial silica filter sand. Pour the sand in through the opening at the top of the filter slowly to avoid damaging the laterals.

    • 12

Pivot the diffuser head back to vertical position.

    • 13

Reinstall the closure on top of the filler tank. Hand tighten then use the plastic wrench to tighten an additional 1/4 turn.

    • 14

Open the intake and suction valves to the pool and turn the multiport valve to "Filter." Turn on the circulating pump. Observe the air bleeder valve on top of the filter tank. When water begins spurting out, close the air bleeder valve.
