Hard Water Removal From Gunite Pools

A gunite pool is a common type of in-ground swimming pool. Gunite is a specially formulated concrete mixture that is applied with a gun spray applicator. Pool owners must balance the water chemistry as part of routine maintenance. Calcium hardness is one aspect of water chemistry that must also be balanced. It's the measure of mineral deposits in your water. High calcium hardness leads to hard water. The best way to lower the calcium hardness is to dilute the water by partially draining your pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the water for calcium hardness using testing strips or a water testing kit. Only drain if the calcium hardness is above the normal range as indicated by the testing kit.

    • 2

Turn the pool filter off. Switch the multi-port valve to the "drain" setting. Allow the water to drain just below the skimmer. This will empty about 20 percent of the pool water for an average 5-foot swimming pool.

    • 3

Drop the garden hose into the pool. Turn on the water supply and allow the pool to fill-up with water to somewhere between the halfway and two-thirds mark of the skimmer's vertical height.

    • 4

Turn the multi-port valve back to the "filter" setting and restart. Test the water again and repeat if the calcium hardness is still high.
