How to Repair an Outside Aluminum Pool

Outside aluminum pools are above-ground pools. Unlike traditional concrete in-ground pools, these pools are constructed of aluminum framing and hold water with a thick vinyl bladder or lining. If one of the aluminum walls is punctured, this will eventually cause a tear in the vinyl resulting from the jagged edges. To alleviate this problem you can repair an outside aluminum pool by patching it with a cold-weld compound.

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum snips
  • Rubber gloves
  • Steel wool
  • Acetone
  • Sponge
  • Cold-weld kit (hardener and epoxy resin)
  • Plastic cup
  • Plastic putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off any jagged edges with aluminum snips, leaving a smooth surface.

    • 2

Put on rubber gloves and use steel wool along with acetone to clean the damaged spot on the pool. Rinse the aluminum with a damp sponge and let air dry once it is clean.

    • 3

Mix equal parts of hardener and epoxy resin in a plastic cup to create a cold-weld compound.

    • 4

Apply the cold-weld compound to the aluminum pool with a plastic putty knife and let dry for about 6 hours.

    • 5

Periodically check the cold-weld patch over the next 48 hours for leaks. If any leaks occur or the cold weld comes apart, mix more compound and spread it over the aluminum.
