How to Calculate the Exterior Deck Size of an In-ground Pool

If you have an in-ground pool in your yard, it's important to keep it well-maintained so that it is safe for anyone who uses your pool or the deck. Knowing the size of the deck allows you to purchase the correct amount of materials you need for a deck-maintenance project, such as applying sealant to or painting the deck.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an image of the deck and pool on a piece of paper. This makes it easier to calculate the size of the deck, especially if it has an odd shape. If the deck and pool have curves or angles and are not rectangular-shaped, break the image down into basic geometric shapes -- rectangles, triangles and arcs.

    • 2

Take measurements of the pool and deck for each section on the sketch.

    • 3

Calculate the area of the entire space covered by the pool and deck by using the following formulas:

Calculate the area of a rectangle by multiplying length times width.

Calculate the area of a triangle by multiplying the base and the height of the triangle by 1/2.

Calculate the area of a circle by multiplying the radius of the circle by itself, then multiplying that number by pi, which is 3.14.

    • 4

Calculate the area of the pool, using the formulas listed above.

    • 5

Subtract the area of the pool from the area of the deck. This will give you the size of the deck.
