Is Solar Ionization Available for Pools?

The joys of having a swimming pool in your backyard are often displaced by the need to constantly battle algae and other impurities in the water. The large amounts of necessary chemicals added to the water to combat those irritants are another negative. If only there was a better, efficient way to achieve a pleasantly pristine pool, and now there is: a solar-powered floating ionizer.
  1. What Ionization Is

    • NASA had to develop a water purification system to rid the space shuttle's water supply of pollutants such as algae, viruses and bacteria. The agency's scientists came up with an ionization system composed of copper and silver electrodes to attract and destroy them. This is what is used in today's pool water ionization systems, with an eco-friendly power source.

    Solar-powered Pool Ionizers

    • Advances in solar technologies have provided a safe, economical power source for your pool ionization system. The ones available on the market have solar cells on top, which are then converted into electricity that sends atom-sized minerals into the pool water to attract the pollutants. You can be swimming in your pool while the floating solar-powered ionizer does its work.

    Specific Atomic Minerals

    • Every molecule is composed of atoms, which are either negatively or positively charged and attract one another. Atomic traces of copper and silver are electrically charged and sent out into the water to attract algae and other microorganisms to them and then are disposed of. These trace minerals are so minute as to be as safe as drinking water from your home faucet.

    Another Benefit

    • While ionization will take care of the algae, viruses and bacteria in your pool, it will not get rid of suntan lotion residue and bio-fluids. You will still need to use chlorine or some other oxidizer to handle those problems. However, the amount you will have to put in the water will be reduced by up to 80 percent, and you will have full use of your pool every day of the season.
