How to Kill Moss Around a Pool on Concrete

The moist environment and lack of competition for nutrients makes pool side concrete an ideal spot for moss growth. Moss thrives in many situations where other plants would perish because it has no root system and requires few nutrients to thrive. Aside from being unattractive, moss growing on pool side concrete is slick and creates an unsafe environment for running or jumping into the water. Manual and chemical controls are safe, effective ways to kill moss near your pool.

Instructions

    • 1

Manually remove as much moss as possible with a hard push broom. Using pressure, brush the poolside moss away from the water and into the surrounding grass or vegetation. Moss does not produce a root system, making manual removal an efficient option.

    • 2

Examine the concrete near the pool for any remaining moss growth. If the moss is not completely removed, move onto the next step.

    • 3

Create a mixture of 3/4 cup baking soda and 1 gallon water. Work the baking soda solution into any remaining moss with a plastic scrub brush.

    • 4

Allow the baking soda mixture to remain for 15 minutes before rinsing it away with a garden hose. Point the hose away from the pool to prevent water contamination by the loose moss.
