How to Check the Salt Level in Your Saltwater Swimming Pool

A saltwater pool is a chlorine-based pool that does not require the regular addition of a chlorine as a standard chlorine-based system does. Instead, a saltwater pool uses a chlorine generator that transforms the salt in the pool water to chlorine. In order for the water to stay sanitized, the salt in the water must be maintained between 2,500 and 4,000 parts per million (ppm). This means you must routinely check the concentration of salt in the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your pool filter. Check your saltwater generator: Most will have a low-salt indicator that alerts you when salt levels are too low. Some will have a digital output that gives you the exact salt reading. If you have one of these, you do not need a testing kit.

    • 2

Purchase a saltwater testing kit or strips at your local pool supply retailer. Check the expiration date on the testing strips. Expired strips will not give an accurate reading.

    • 3

Dip the testing strips into the water, and follow the manufacturer's instructions, as they vary. Consult the color chart to obtain the salt level in the water.
