How to Heat an Unheated Pool

Some pool owners make the decision to implement an electrical or solar-powered heating system for their swimming pool. Although quite beneficial for those seeking heated water, they can be costly for some. Solar covers are not as effective as a dedicated heating system, but can still provide a cost-friendly alternative for those without a heated pool. Solar covers create a vapor barrier that traps heats from the sun, which is then used to warm the pool water.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your swimming pool's surface area and determine the pool's shape. Most pool owners already know these dimensions. Solar covers are precut into most common swimming pool shapes and sizes.

    • 2

Purchase a solar cover from your local pool supply or online retailer. The common solar cover is plastic tinted light blue and looks similar to bubble wrap used in mailings. Remove the solar cover from the packaging.

    • 3

Place the solar cover bubble-side down on top of the pool surface. Remove the cover whenever you are adding chemicals and when swimmers are in the pool. The cover can stay on the pool all other times. This helps reduce evaporation of the water as well.
